The Department of Banking and Finance was created in April, 2018. It was created out of the Department of Economics which has been in existence since 1975. The Bayero University College was then affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and degrees were awarded by the parent university until 1979 when full- edged University status was attained. 

 Before the creation of the Department of Banking and Finance, Department of Economics offers B.Sc. Banking and Finance from 2012/2013 academic session up till 2017/2018 session, as well as Masters in Banking and Finance (MBF) and Post Graduate Diploma in Banking Finance (PGDBF) for decades. The B.Sc. Banking and Finance was transferred to the new Department in 2017-2018 academic session, while the MBF and the PGDBF are transferred in 2019/2020 academic session. 

 The Department runs one B.Sc. degree in Banking and Finance and seven (7) postgraduate programmes as follows: Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance (PGDBF), Post Graduate Diploma in Islamic Banking and Finance (PGDIBF), Masters in Banking and Finance (MBF), Masters in Islamic Banking and Finance (MIBF), M.Sc. Islamic Banking and Finance (MSc IBF), M.Sc. Banking and Finance and PhD Banking and Finance.
