I very warmly welcome you to the Department of Finance, Bayero University, Kano. Our core mandate is to undertake training, practice-oriented research, as well as community service in the fields of Finance. We prioritise one-on-one engagement between our academic staff and students in training high-quality graduates that are well skilled and knowledgeable in finance. This mandate is in accordance with the University’s mission to address Africa’s developmental challenges through cutting-edge research, knowledge transfers and training of high-quality graduates. The mission is supported by a dedicated team of highly talented and trained individuals in different areas of specialisations across the University.
The Department of Finance was established in 2018, initially as Department of Banking and Finance, from the Department of Economics which has been in existence since 1975. Prior to the establishment of the department all programmes in Banking and Finance were offered in the Department of Economics, including B.Sc. in Banking and Finance as well as Masters in Banking and Finance (MBF) and Post Graduate Diploma in Banking Finance (PGDBF). Subsequently, the Department commenced academic postgraduate programmes: M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Banking and Finance. The title of B.Sc Banking and Finance degree was changed to B.Sc Finance by the University Senate in 2024 in accordance with the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for the Nigerian University System.
The Department offers the following five (5) programmes:
- B.Sc. Finance (replacing B.Sc. Banking and Finance)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Banking and Finance (PGDBF)
- Masters in Banking and Finance (MBF)
- M.Sc. Banking and Finance
- PhD Banking and Finance
Graduates from the Department are among the most competitive professionals in the market, because of their level of preparedness for leadership roles in finance, banking and capital market, as well as policy making in the economy and globally.
We also collaborate with professional bodies, corporate organisations, as well as finance and investment advisory institutions. This allows us to improve our students’ skills in leadership, teamwork, decision making and the technical aspects of finance, banking and investment disciplines.
